Overview
In 1982, Alexander John Mitchell started an economic and cultural revolution when he pioneered Canada’s first craft brewery in Horseshoe Bay, BC. Two years later, John Mitchell, along with partner Paul Hadfield, opened Spinnakers, the first destination brew pub in North America.
The John Mitchell Award for Brewing Excellence is presented annually to individuals whose brewing expertise, inspiration, enthusiasm, and industry support have contributed to the betterment of Canada’s craft brewing movement.
Winners of the John Mitchell Award for Brewing Excellence will be presented by steward John Ohler in the following categories:
Brewer Award
The Brewer Award is bestowed on professional brewers who have made a major contribution to Canada’s craft beer industry both in and out of the brew house.
Builder Award
The Builder Award is bestowed on individuals who have dedicated their lives and careers to the development of Canada’s craft beer industry while working outside of the physical brew house.
Community Award
The Community Award is bestowed upon individuals who have made a major contribution to Canada’s craft beer industry as an ambassador, influencer, supplier, enthusiast, representative, merchant, etc.
History
The Inaugural John Mitchell Award Winner (2023) was Tony Dewald.
